It's a cliche by now. People say that certain songs make them think of a certain event or time in their lives. I always thought that to be sentimental rubbish. Until it happened to me the other day. I was at work, innocently chugging along with my daily work when "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions came on. I know it's corny to like the Scorpions and really, this is the only song I like by them. But I was suddenly seized by a nostalgic rush that made me think of my time living in Germany during the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It makes me think of Ramstein Jr. High School, our house in Niedermohr, Germany and my bizarre (at the time) infatuation with 80's hair metal music. And smoking cigarettes with the dumbest kids alive at the playground across from school. And the girl I had a crush on in my history class. And my brother's weird interest in clothing by Starter (jackets, sweatshirts, hats etc.) And then there's the fall of the Wall, itself. The younger set these days won't ever understand what a monumental event the fall of the Wall was. The end of Communism, the end of the split between east and west Germany. I don't know if I'm explaining it well but there it is.
