So today was Star Wars Day. I grew up on the Holy Trilogy. I read just about all the main novels in the 90's. I collected all the 'Shadows of the Empire' comics, books, soundtrack, video game, action figures. I have the R2D2 Pepsi cooler. I've made a Boba Fett and Darth Maul costume. And I have the deluxe Rubies Queen Amidala velvet and fur costume with the full headdress, and light up eggs (which I wore at Otakon '07 on a dare from this guy here). And no one, NO ONE, has been able to beat me at 'Star Wars Trivial Pursuit.' Point is, I was a 'Star Wars' fanatic. I say was because over the past couple of years I really haven't been all that interested in 'Star Wars.' I didn't even know that they had a 'Star Wars Day.'
I see it like this: 'Star Wars' is like the girl (or guy if you're a girl... or into guys NTTAWWT) you've dated for the longest time. You've always been madly in love but one day you find you are drifting apart. Then you find you don't want to be with her anymore. It's not that you don't like her, you still do, you just don't want to be together. It's over. So you part ways. Every now and then though you get together and hang out. You catch up on what's new and then leave it at that until you see each other again. That's how it's been with me for 'Star Wars.'
Tonight I had an opportunity to join Steve and Peekaboo in seeing 'Fanboys'. The coincidence that I was going to see a movie about 'Star Wars' fans on this 'Star Wars Day' was not lost on me. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I'm glad they were able to keep the cancer plot in the film. And I was a lot like those guys. I was a total 'Star Wars' dork. And I kind of miss it, you know? I missed being absolutely in love with 'Star Wars' even if the new trilogy did kind of suck. But that's the way of life sometimes. I'll always have a place in my heart for 'Star Wars' even if I don't go out and buy the latest novel or toy. So happy 'Star Wars Day' and May the Fourth Be With You!
BTW: I'm going to go see 'Star Trek' this weekend. And I'm gonna be wearing a 'Star Wars' shirt when I go!
